Matthias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo): “Grateful to be 2nd behind Pogacar”

April 19 th 2023 - 17:43

I told Danish TV before the start that I would be grateful if I got a 2nd place behind Tadej, because he might be the best-rider ever. I think his only weak spot is when he gets too excited and forgets to eat. Jumbo-Visma exploited it last year, and for now I think he won’t make that mistake again. Tadej is just a one-in-a-century kind of rider. Hopefully we can get closer to him… but as of now he doesn’t have any weak spots.

At Trek-Segafredo we knew that we had a very good team for this Ardennes classics already before this race. 2nd and 5th is a very good result. We all are in very good shape and we will try to make it very difficult for Pogacar on Sunday.

I am only 22 years old, so I have room for improvement. As for what kind of climber I am, I want to say I fancy longer climbs, but I’m more explosive than I thought. In the future we want me to be a GT leader, but I’m not close to the best right now on long climbs and we need to work on that. As of now, this kind of punchy, explosive finals are perfect for me.
